when it rains it pours

So I went to diehard101.com today to check in on the amount of members we had signed up today. We are still getting a decent amount of visitors from the activity a couple of days ago and the bounce rate decreased by 25% from Monday to Tuesday.

I go to the site and I get a forbidden message, after my wife threw water on my face to have me come back I called my CTO and Editor in Chief. We don't know what took place, we thought the server crashed. That wasn't the answer, we still don't… Continue

Son of a BI*&H

Today we had our greatest day of traffic coming to the site EVER. One of my content writers wrote an article about Manny Ramirez and how he would fit in with EVERY MLB team in the league. He then went to the mlb forums and posted the article and we didn't sign up one person. We are 4 days away from our beta stage of the site and we missed out on over 1400 new people visiting the site today.

I am taking the positive out of it, we did one article and had 1400 plus folks come over to… Continue

Mobile Marketing: Friend or Foe? Part I

A seasoned business traveler quickly left a meeting to head to the airport for a 48-hour business trip. In haste to get out the door, the traveler left his mobile device on the charger.

The traveler’s initial feelings of uncertainty slowly morphed into mild anxiety, realizing this mental blunder could potentially result in a missed flight, missed appointments or something unthinkable.

With two crackberry addiction counseling sessions under his belt, he couldn’t fathom being… Continue

New Groups for Sports Team

Employees at sports teams are often curious how other folks at other teams do their jobs. Inside each league, we use E mail lists often to communicate with our colleagues, but until now we've had no way to store the conversations for others to use, and we've had no good way to connect with colleagues working in other sports.

Enter Sports 2.0...to make a central place for these questions and answers to live, we recently added several groups designed to help employees of sports teams… Continue

Professional Sports team continue to offer social media capabilities on their own site

In a trend that has been picking up steam over the past six months, more and more professional sports teams are tapping into social media to engage their fans online. Whether to provide the ultimate destination for fans to share their passion for their specific team, to grow audience, or to create new revenue opportunities, sports organizations are creating communities/social networks on their own site. The latest team to do so is the New York Knicks. You can check out their new community on… Continue

What seems like 10 minutes is actually 2 days! More insanity

I keep on trying to set aside a few minutes to come into this fantastic website and do some more blogging on a consistent basis and it is very frustrating for me not to be able to do so. I think about it and I tell myself okay in 10 minutes I'm going to sportsmarketing20.com and I am going to blog, give some people a few updates, maybe make a person or two chuckle a bit and give them updates on where Diehard101.com is. However, next thing I know it is 2 days later. Go figure.

So an… Continue

How do we bridge the gap between social networks?

Much of my time at the Colts is spent doing research on what other companies or organizations are doing to engage customers and fans using social networking. Facebook, with 36 million unique U.S. visitors and 115 world unique visitors, is a giant in the world of social networking. Our challenge is to figure out how drive traffic from Facebook to our… Continue

Diehard101.com is in Alpha

It has been a little while since I last did a blog. I have been swamped with the ups and downs of trying to launch a brand new media property. Some great things have taken place over the last 7 days for Diehard101.com. We somehow were picked up by a few sports fanboards! What ended up happening is that our subscribers went from 100 to 200 in 4 days this last week! We had record breaking days for new signups, page views, comments, blogs and more importantly buzz.

Some members from a… Continue

How our SMS promotion works...

How it works...

I recently had a post about how we are using text messaging to drive traffic to MyColts.net. I promised that I would give a little more detail on how the promotion works.

Let's say we go to an autograph signing from 4 to 6 in Columbus, Indiana.

-Colts fans come to our event and see a promotional banner, flier, or speak to one of our staff members and are encouraged to text "COLTS" to a short… Continue

Steelers vs. Cowboys in social media co-opetition

Finally, two sports teams that get it! The Steelers face the Cowboys this Sunday in Dallas, and thanks to some clever work by each team’s digital crews, the franchises are competing in social media spheres as well. Steelers & Cowboys are evenly matched in both realms. Both teams have 7-6 records this season, and they’re [...]

Email Power Rankings for MLB teams

How did E mail become the “other” white meat? While everyone is going crazy over social media, I suspect Email is getting overlooked and underutilized by many professional sports teams. With this suspicion on my brain I set out recently to do a little research using baseball teams as my subjects. The results of my [...]

College sports fans blame carriers for poor connectivity at stadiums

Want to get your wireless partner to pay for connectivity upgrades at your stadium? Show them this… ….Ninety-nine percent of smart phone owners have experienced trouble calling or connecting at sports stadiums, and (as a result) sixty-eight percent of these fans think less positively about their wireless carriers. That’s right, fans don’t blame the team [...]

College fans like Twitter more than Facebook for sports

If America’s major universities want to engage avid sports fans during live events, they should pay more attention to Twitter than Facebook, and they should forget about Foursquare altogether; At least what our data seem to be saying. As part of our ongoing “Social Sports Poll,” we recently surveyed social media fans and followers of [...]
