WPS Embracing Social Networking, Digital to do a lot with a little

Yet another professional sports league is entering the fray as the Women’s Professional Soccer League debuts this Sunday. It is a niche market in a cluttered sports marketplace and is therefore pulling out all of the stops - to ensure that the league debuts with a bang. Interestingly enough, the dynamite that will use in this situation it will use is social networking, most notably Twitter.

Playing off the technology and the ubiqitousness of Twitter in sports recently, after both… Continue

NFL and DirecTV deal - Streaming Rights Play a Prominent Role in the Deal

As I am sure you heard, NFL recently extended its partnership with DirecTV via a 4-year, $4 billion deal. In addition to a significant markup from the previous deal ($700 million / year in the previous deal), the deal is the first time that the NFL has licensed online rights to its games. Open to non-DirecTV subscribers for the first time, the satellite provider will look to use it as a valued marketing tool to increase… Continue

I have a team in place but I am looking for someone to head up my marketing division. This person must be very aggressive in growing this website.

"A Sports Marketing Crusade"

I am reminded as I post to this blog the infamous cry of the commander of Apollo 12 "failure is not an option!"... and can only suggest now that the antithesis of this remark could be applied to the arena and sportscape of markets today with the new crusading remark that "Success is the only option!!"

What identifies success and competitive markets more appropriately in peoples current lifestyles more aptly than sport? Sports are as much front page as well… Continue

Socially Responsible Twitter?

Are you looking for a way to increase your team or organization's Twitter following? How about using your fans to drive traffic to your Twitter account?

Ferriss is guaranteeing a $3 donation to public schools for every new and unique follower on the digital PR and social networking vehicle with a cap at 50,000 Tweets.

Teams Using Twitter to Connect with Fans

Many teams are using Twitter and other social media to stay in touch with their fans. Twitter allows teams to advertise, promote and provide news to fans for no price -- an increasingly effective tool in sports marketing.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, for example, have made good use of Twitter. For a recent home game, they used Twitter for a special ticket giveaway. The Phoenix Suns are another team that has used Twitter to its advantage. Led by Director of Digital Media &… Continue

Breaking news! Ratner wins a big Yards case

Atlantic Yards developer Bruce Ratner scored a big win in court this week, as one of the state’s highest courts brushed aside opponents’ claim that the mega-project should be scrapped because its environmental review was a “sham.”

In a unanimous ruling handed down on Thursday, the Appellate Division affirmed a similar verdict made last January in state Supreme Court.

“The 3,500-page final [environmental impact statement] impressively detailed analyses of the project’s… Continue

Finally, two sports teams that get it! Email Power Rankings for MLB teams

How did E mail become the “other” white meat? While everyone is going crazy over social media, I suspect Email is getting overlooked and underutilized by many professional sports teams. With this suspicion on my brain I set out recently to do a little research using baseball teams as my subjects. The results of my [...]

College fans like Twitter more than Facebook for sports

If America’s major universities want to engage avid sports fans during live events, they should pay more attention to Twitter than Facebook, and they should forget about Foursquare altogether; At least what our data seem to be saying. As part of our ongoing “Social Sports Poll,” we recently surveyed social media fans and followers of [...]
