Hi Dan,
Using twitter for that purpose is a great idea. It will add value to the program and target prospective students. I would suggest sharing links to sports news and engaging with sports professionals on twitter. However, make sure you keep up with it. Not responding to comments of your followers could only hurt you. Also, you can think about encompassing class assignments where your students submit via "tweets".

Hi Dan --

While I don't use Twitter as an academician, I think you would find it to be a great way to meet your goals. I suggest the best ways to figure out how you can share your information is to read tweets of other professionals. Watch and learn for awhile, then dip your toe in...engage with people that you find interesting by following and tweeting with them. If you dedicate a few minutes each day, I think you'll find your groove and the tool's value, in a short amount of time.

Hi Folks,

I am a college professor of sport management at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. I have not used Twitter before but I would like to use Twitter to: 1) add value to the curriculum by providing a place online to provide additional content for, past, current and potential future students, as well as to 2) enhance the profile of our program and find ways new ways to recruit potential students.

Has anyone used Twitter for this purpose? Can anyone suggest ways to use Twitter to achieve my proposed objectives? Are there other ways Twitter can be used in this context to achieve additional objectives I have not identified?

Interested in reading your thoughts.

Thanks!

Hi Deanna --

I have more than 1,600 followers on Twitter which is small to some, large to others. I have hovered around that number for awhile simply because people have dropped off and joined the party based on the value they believe I provide (which is the same reason I follow people). This, I believe, is the "natural process"of adding followers.

Hi Deanna,
You pose a great question. I am going to check in with a lot of my professional blogger friends - those with a large following - and ask them. I'll post my findings here.

I'm curious see if using automated tools has a negative impact. Relevance and authenticity may be lost. Does anyone have an example of creating a large number of followers through a natural process of social connections via twitter?
